History

Bauer Park was originally the farmland of Erwin Bauer, a longtime Madison resident and conservationist. The land was used for small-scale farming and was kept largely undeveloped throughout the 20th century. Erwin Bauer had a strong appreciation for the natural landscape and chose not to sell the land for development. Instead, he maintained the fields, woods, and buildings as part of a working homestead. His respect for open space and the environment helped shape the park’s current purpose and feel. Many of the original farm structures, including the red barns and farmhouse, still stand today.

In 1990, Erwin Bauer officially donated the 64-acre property to the Town of Madison. His goal was to preserve the land as open space and create a place where future generations could enjoy nature and learn about the environment. The town accepted the gift and soon began to restore trails, gardens, and infrastructure to support community use. This act of generosity led to one of Madison’s most loved public spaces, blending conservation with recreation. The park has remained free and open to the public ever since. Its layout still follows the contours of the original farm fields and woods.
The Bauer Park Harvest Festival began as a way to honor the park’s agricultural history and bring the community together. Held each fall, the event includes hayrides, cider pressing, craft tables, music, and displays of antique farm tools. The festival draws families, students, and longtime residents for a day of hands-on learning and fun. It celebrates not only the park’s rural roots but also the community’s ongoing connection to the land. The event is run by volunteers and town staff, keeping with the spirit of local stewardship that Erwin Bauer valued. Over time, it has become one of Madison’s signature seasonal events.
